Silvery, Thunderer & Excelsior

London four Silvery take already been drawing deserved attention for their cautiously crafted and craftily curated forays into musical eccentricity of an especially British kind.

They are this year's Darkness, though it has to be aforesaid they discharge themselves with bucketfuls more sophistication than the Queen-wannabes. The cover of Thunderer And Excelsior, Silvery's 14-track debut, features the silhouette of a gas mask-wearing man in a plug hat hat with a gun and a lance sitting on what looks suspiciously like a polo gymnastic horse. Yes, they're that bats!

Silvery are unabashed around acknowledging their eclectic musical references 'from Bowie, Blur, Sparks to XTC'. They could just as easily suffer mentioned Ten Pole Tudor, Madness and even Nirvana (assuming the gurus of grunge had ever toyed with the idea of Happy Hardcore). If TISWAS had been a ring rather than a TV show, this is how it would have sounded.

The sheer defenseless affrontery of it is appealing. Strangely, it induces happiness. Perhaps it's the giddy noticeableness, the intoxicating amphetamine drive, or the incontestably infectious conviction of it all? Silvery ar The Kinks for the Sunny D generation.

You won't have to send for Forensics to recognise the musical DNA that drips from every note: Sparks are here throughout and after the scuzzy guitar intro of the opener, Horrors, at the point where the Ron Mael-strom keyboard kicks in, youll find yourself anchored into the worryingly accelerated heartbeat of Silvery.

That said, there's an undeniable charm (or grating irritation if you're that style inclined) about listening to a track like the operatically-structured Revolving Sleepy Signs, which starts with a drunken pastiche of Queen before moving into Fun Boy 3 territory via XTC en route to the hallucinogenic-tinged world of Bowie at his Ziggy peak to conclude in a resplendently gregarious mess hall of sounds. This is perfect last-hour-at-the-school disco material.

Enough said. Silvery won't fight to regain an audience for this deliciously chutzpah-saturated debut. Whether they can develop to keep it, may well prove to be some other matter.

Miss Universe Australia dressed for success

They've dressed like lifesavers and worn outback outfits or Crocodile Dundee-style hats.

But Australia's latest Miss Universe contestant, Laura Dundovic, will this year wear a more glamorous version of what passes for national costume.

True, she'll be wearing a wooden boomerang around her neck at next month's pageant in Vietnam.

But Dundovic's outfit, unveiled today, is a flowing gown said to be inspired by Australia's sun, surf and desert.

With her family and boyfriend watching on, Dundovic, 21, paraded the flowing white, aqua and brown dress at a Sydney hotel and later described it as "very comfy" and "very flattering".

"Most of them are very corsetty, I've got a lot of freedom in this one," she said.

Designed by Jayson Brunsdon, the gown is a much safer option than offerings from the last couple of years.

Last year's Australia contestant, Kim Busteed, wore a controversial lifesaver costume, 2006 entrant Erin McNaught wore a khaki outback-themed outfit, and 2005's Michelle Guy failed to impress with frock complete with a Crocodile Dundee-style hat.

Brunsdon said he wanted to do something different and highlight Australian nature.

"Rather than drawing inspiration from Australian characters, such as surfers and shearers, I want to express the natural elements of the country - the colour and shape to create a beautiful sweeping gown that will comment on the sea, sand and desert," he said.

Dundovic also modelled lingerie, shapewear, swimwear and sportswear and turned heads in a long red-beaded evening gown by Connie Simonetti.

"Everything is beautiful," Dundovic said.

Dundovic, a psychology student from Dural in Sydney, said she would love to follow in the footsteps of Australia's most successful contestant, 2004 Miss Universe winner Jennifer Hawkins.

As well as modelling, Hawkins now has a TV career with the Seven Network, appearing on its Great Outdoors travel program, and is soon to front the reality TV show, Make Me A Supermodel.

"When I was growing up I did a lot of public speaking and debating and I'm not afraid of being in front of a crowd," Dundovic said.

"So I would always love to do a career in that (media).

"But it's always something very hard to pursue ... with media, it's something you have to make a good impression and hopefully this will do it for me."

Dundovic said she hadn't spoken with Hawkins yet, but was getting a lot of tips from Guy and Busteed on everything from clothes to how to get her luggage to Vietnam.

The competition will be held next month at Nha Trang in Vietnam, with the international final to take place on July 14.

Dundovic said she was excited, but would miss her boyfriend Brock McDermott, who she met bowling while at high school.

They have been dating for three years.

"He's a really lovely boy. I'm just not going to see him for a month and a half now," she said.

Alanis Morissette's Entanglement Tastes Good...

Stuntman killed on Woo movie set

A stuntman filming John Woo's new movie in Beijing was killed in a bizarre fire when a small boat rammed into the set of an ancient warship, state media said.

At least three people were injured in the accident during the shooting of the battle epic Chi Bi, or Red Cliff.

"The fire broke out early Monday morning when the crew were shooting a scene in which a small, smoking boat crashed with a large ancient war vessel," Xinhua news agency said.

At the point of collision, at which machines let out smoke, an unchoreographed flame jumped 30 metres  into the air, the Beijing News said, citing crew at the northern Beijing location.

Woo, director of such hits as Face/Off and Mission Impossible II, was in Hong Kong at the time of the accident.

The film, adapted from China's classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, is set in 208 AD in the dying days of the Han dynasty, culminating in the battle of Red Cliff in which 2,000 ships were burnt.

It stars Hong Kong's Tony Leung, the Chinese mainland's Zhang Fengyi and Takeshi Kaneshiro, whose father is from Japan and mother is from Taiwan.

REVIEW: Wanted (18 TBC)

Wanted sees two rising stars getting their ‘big shot’: renowned Russian director Timur Bekmambetov (perhaps easier to remember as ‘the guy who directed Nightwatch’) directs his first English language movie, whilst young British star James McAvoy follows up hits Atonement and The Last King of Scotland with this action film, based on the comic book series by Mark Millar.

Wesley (McAvoy) is a loser. He works a job he loathes, sleeps with a girlfriend he hates, and generally does not leave much of an impression on the world. That is until Fox (Angelina Jolie) comes into his life. She finds him and introduces him to The Fraternity, a secret society of assassins who kill targets chosen by the mysterious Weavers. Their philosophy: kill one to save one thousand. Wesley’s late father (who left when he was two) was one of them, until he was killed by a renegade member. Wesley must be trained by Fox and The Fraternity’s leader, Sloane (Morgan Freeman) in their fighting techniques (which includes bending bullets) in order to seek out the renegade and get his revenge.

Wanted's plot feels like all three Matrix movies squished into one: a great opening; an action-heavy but so-so middle; and a disappointing final third. Whilst it’s unlikely that the Wachowski’s will be ringing their lawyers, there’s an awful lot of similarities,  particularly a scene where Wesley has to shoot a fly(!). Freeman may as well have put on a leather jacket and whispered “Free your mind”. That said, there’s a lot of fun to be had here - no shocks, but a lot of big bangs, blood spurting and some genuinely funny gags.

McAvoy was an inspired choice as Wesley. Had this been, say, Paul Walker in the lead, this would have been a fraction of the film. Adeptly putting across his character’s pathetic/apathetic existence, you feel Wesley’s a genuine loser. The same can’t be said for Jolie, who gives an incredibly phoned in performance. She’s the eye-candy, simple as that. There’s one speech that attempts to flesh her out as a character, but it’s not enough. She looks good with a gun, and fantastic without any clothes on, but other than that she is redundant. Morgan Freeman is great, even though he’s here for the paycheque, and the only one who seems to have his tongue in his cheek. Hearing him swear is worth the ticket price alone.

Wanted is a great ride - bullets, babes, and tonnes of wish fulfilment for the frustrated male 9-to-fiver. However, it takes itself far too seriously, especially given its very silly script (again, we point you to the ‘shoot the fly’ scene). Great fun for a Saturday night, or for a slow weeknight when it’s out on DVD, but not the action movie reinvention that the brilliant trailers promised.
Dir: Timur Bekmambetov

Starring: James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman.

Release date: 27th June.

Britney Spears - Spears Gibson Meet Up At Cigar Bar

BRITNEY SPEARS and MEL GIBSON's odd friendship has continued following their Costa Rican holiday last month (May08) - the odd couple was spotted chatting at an exclusive Beverly Hills cigar

lounge on Tuesday night (10Jun08).

Spears and the movie star spent almost three hours talking at what appeared to be a business meeting at a members-only bar, called the Havana Club.

In a bid to avoid a paparazzi frenzy, both stars arrived separately as patrons were watching the Los Angeles Lakers/Boston Celtics basketball final on a big screen.

The bar has long been a favourite for smoking stars - Ben Affleck, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger have all been known to frequent the Havana.

When Spears left with a business associate and her bodyguard, Gibson stayed at the bar for a further hour, leaving at about 11pm, according to People.com.
